According to one of the national dailies that reported a story on calls by some Northern leaders requesting the president of Nigeria, Mohammadu Buhari, to do away with the national constitutional conference which was convened during the administration of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan as the president of Nigeria, however, some Abia people have spoken against the call while urging the incumbent president to implement the report done last year, adding that the recommendations were duly deliberated before it was considered as a working document.
The Rector, Abia State College of Health Sciences and Management Technology Aba, Sir Frank Ibe, said those leaders from the North who are calling for the cancellation of that report are doing so for their selfish interest. He maintained that those who represented every states, local government, group, students’ union government, trade unions, churches, civic society organization are credible men and women who are abreast with the history of our country Nigeria.
According to Sir Ibe, it cost the federal government billons of Naira to host the conference and wondered why the conference will be repeated for the second time.
In his words “It is wrong that some leaders from the North are calling on the federal government to cancel the conference when Nigerians expects the new president to adopt the report of the conference and make it a working document that will favour the well being of the geopolitical zones in the country.
“The argument that the last conference was not in their interest is wrong. I have the perception that they are scheming to scuttle the conference where it was agreed that an additional state should be created in the South East to repair the imbalance, where it has only five states, while the rest have six and one in the North has seven.
I want to use this opportunity to call on the president of Nigeria, Mohammadu Buhari, to please adopt the national conference report as a working document for equity, fairness and justice.”
