Factors that compel Igbo Naming (Part 3)

Names are highly respected in Igbo land. This is so because; they can be used to trace the history, origin and beliefs of the people. Personal names therefore, often stand out in that part of Nigeria and are regarded as words for which persons are known. They are also used for identification and classifications. So, here and in other parts of the country names are parts and parcels of the people’s culture. It becomes obvious therefore, that names especially personal names do not exist in a vacuum like in other climes where a person can be called names likes Stone, Drink water, Long, (ironically, when the bearer might even be short) etc. In Igbo land, naming ceremonies are highly revered and celebrated and they normally take place on the 24th day of the baby’s birth.
