Serious allegations of torture and abuse of power have emerged against officers at the Oporikoko Police Station in Delta State, as a young woman, Jenny James George, accused a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of ordering the brutal flogging of at least 15 women, forcing them to confess to prostitution.
In a video obtained by SaharaReporters, the visibly distressed victim narrated how she and others were allegedly arrested, detained overnight, stripped naked and flogged with wire-like objects on the orders of a female DPO.
Recounting the incident, George said, “Last week Thursday, I went to a shop in Delta Mall to hang out with a friend. So when I got there, there was a sienna that just bracketed us. Everybody ran inside the shop… the sienna came and carried all of us… we were about 15 they took us to Oporikoko police station. We spent the night there.”
She alleged that the ordeal worsened the following morning when the DPO arrived.
“On Friday morning… they brought us to the DPO office… she instructed two guys… not in uniform… to flog us,” she said.
According to her, the alleged assault was carried out to extract confessions.
“If she asks you, ‘Are you a prostitute?’ If you say no, they slap you… if you say no, she flogs you… they flogged us… before we gave a statement that we are prostitutes.”
George further alleged that the victims were stripped naked and flogged on sensitive parts of their bodies.
“They flogged us naked… flogged us on our private parts… some of us had our clothes removed,” she said, adding that multiple people, including men and women, were present and watched the incident unfold.
Describing the weapon used, she said, “They used wire… there’s a kind of black stick, but if they flog you, the stick breaks and there’s wire inside.
She also claimed that the victims were recorded after the assault and forced to admit to prostitution on camera.
“They made a video of us after the flogging and said we should admit that we are prostitutes,” she stated.
George said about 15 women were subjected to the same treatment, including others allegedly picked up from different locations such as a playground and those riding in tricycles.
“They flogged all the girls… we slept there till the next day, they flogged us the way they wanted and sent us away,” she added.
The victim said she has since been battling severe physical pain and trauma.
“They flogged my private parts. For me to toilet and urinate for the past one week has been very difficult… all these injuries on my laps,” she said.
Demanding accountability, she declared: “I want justice… I can repeat it anywhere, in front of her.”
The disturbing allegations have sparked fresh concerns about police brutality and impunity within the Delta State Police Command. Sahara Reporters
