Court rejects fresh bail request of Maryam Sanda who killed her husband, Bilyaminu Bello

Justice Yusuf Haliru of the Federal high court Abuja today struck out a fresh bail application filed by Maryam Sanda, the pregnant mother of a six month old baby who stabbed her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, to death at their home in Abuja in November last year.

Maryam’s counsel, Daudu Joseph today told the court to grant her bail because of her pregnancy and the fact that she needed to take care of her 6-month-old baby.

“My lord, the new fact is that she is three months pregnant and I have done my research,” Daudu told the court.

However, the prosecuting counsel, James Idachaba, asked the court to reject the application on grounds that it constituted an abuse of court of process, because Sanda’s counsel had failed to withdraw her notice of appeal challenging the December 14th ruling declining her bail.

Halilu ruled in favour of the prosecutor, saying it would amount to toeing “a path of destruction” to grant Sanda bail since the applicant’s notice of appeal against the court was still pending.

“It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for his (Daudu’s) argument to sway this court. The argument has not in anyway swayed me. The application is liable to be struck out and it is accordingly struck out.”the judge ruled

Meanwhile Maryam and her baby are being remanded at the Suleja prison.
