He dumped every other duty in the home except sleeping with me —wife

“My lord, whenever I bring the needs of our children to the notice of my husband, he will insist he doesn’t have money and will ask that I do a change of ownership for them. Any time he says this,  I always ask him when our children became properties.”

This was part of the evidence presented by Mrs Tawakalitu  Kazeem  against her husband, Bolaji Kazeem at the Oja Oba/Mapo Court C Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Tawakalitu had approached the court seeking for divorce on the accounts of irresponsibility and negligence by her husband.

She pleaded with the court to dissolve her 27-year-old marriage to her husband and grant her custody of their children.

“My lord, my husband is a shameless human being.  He also deserves a degree as a habitual liar.  He’s always lying he has no money and has always dodged his responsibilities in the home.

“He was giving me N200 as feeding allowance  when we got married 27 years ago , since then his mentality has not changed.  I held a meeting with him and the children before he finally agreed to increase the allowance to N350 and this he rarely gives.

“My lord, I have been paying the rent for the past 17 years, feeding our children and sending them to school.  I go to the extent of selling my clothes to feed and clothe them but he feels unconcerned.

“I sell cold tea in the market, and at the end of each day I use the proceeds from my business to purchase food items for the home.  When I cook, he sits down, eats and licks his fingers.

“He has abandoned all his duties in the home. The only duty he has always been faithfully committed to is sleeping with me.  I once moved out of his house and rented an apartment when I got fed up with his irresponsible acts but he still came to where I was and slept with me.

“I later moved back home after my children pleaded with me to have a rethink but he has still failed to change.

“Due to his neglect and failure as the head of the home, our second daughter who is a teenager was impregnated and he has abandoned the responsibility of her care to me.

“My lord, I need a permanent break from this meaningless, horrible union, “she stated.

The defendant failed to show up in court after being served a court summon twice, but their son, Hakeem  Kazeem  who was in court spoke on behalf of his siblings.

”My lord, I must confess that my parents are untruthful in their dealings with each other and are not straightforward.

“Our father is a driver but has been laid off his job. He has been unemployed for years. My brother and I of recent raised a sum of N50, 000 out of N270, 000 and gave it to him to buy a car at hire purchase.

“Our mother is more financially enhanced than our father. She has a shop and a whole bungalow which she inherited from her parents. She receives rent from occupants of this building on yearly basis while she’s also building her own house.

“My lord, we are surprised that our mother is seeking divorce when we their children are now mature and she’s somehow eased of the responsibility of caring for us.

“We have told her that if she is divorcing our father, she’s  also disowning us,” he stated.
