Lobi Stars’ winless streak: Managerial turmoil and on-field struggles plague NPFL giants
March 20th, 2025
Lobi Stars Football Club, once a dominant force in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), is currently enduring a challenging period marked by a prolonged winless streak and frequent managerial changes.
This report delves into the factors contributing to their recent decline and explores potential pathways to recovery. The team’s recent form has been concerning. Over the past several fixtures, Lobi Stars have struggled to secure victories, with matches often ending in draws or losses. For instance, a 1-1 draw against Shooting Stars was followed by a 0-2 defeat to Niger Tornadoes. Subsequent games saw them succumb to defeats against El Kanemi Warriors (0-1), Ikorodu City (0-1), and Bayelsa United (0-1). This sequence of results has left them languishing in the lower echelons of the league table.
A significant factor in Lobi Stars’ decline has been the lack of stable leadership. The club has undergone multiple managerial changes this season, each disrupting team cohesion and strategy. Notably, former Super Eagles coach Daniel Amokachi resigned from his position as Technical Adviser, a move the club described as paving the way for new opportunities. In an attempt to stabilize the team, Lobi Stars appointed Mohammed Baba Ganaru as interim head coach. However, his tenure was short-lived, as he resigned less than one month after his reappointment, citing the team’s abysmal performances. This marks Lobi Stars’ fifth managerial change this season, reflecting their turbulent campaign. The constant managerial changes have inevitably affected player morale and performance.
Reports suggest that the club has imposed pay cuts on players, a move that may further dampen spirits and hinder on-field performances. Analyzing their game plan, Lobi Stars have exhibited defensive vulnerabilities, conceding goals at crucial moments. Their attacking line has also been less than prolific, with key forwards struggling to find the back of the net consistently. This imbalance has contributed to their inability to secure favorable results.
