Switzerland blocks arms exports to U.S. over Iran war
March 20th, 2026
Switzerland has suspended approvals for the export of arms to the United States over its involvement in the ongoing conflict with Iran.
The Swiss government announced the decision in a statement on Friday, saying the move was in line with its neutrality laws governing the export of military equipment during international conflicts, Al-Jazeera reports
It said that “the export of war materiel to countries involved in the international armed conflict with Iran cannot be authorised for the duration of the conflict”.
The authorities explained that the restriction applies directly to the United States due to its role in the war, effectively halting ongoing and future export approvals.
“Exports of war materiel to the USA cannot currently be authorised,” the statement added
Switzerland maintains strict neutrality rules that prevent it from supplying arms to countries actively engaged in armed conflicts, a policy that has guided its foreign relations for decades.
The decision highlights the broader international impact of the conflict, as neutral countries adjust their policies in response to the evolving situation.
Meanwhile, the fighting between Iran, the United States and Israel began in February 2026 following coordinated strikes by U.S. and Israeli forces on Iranian military and nuclear-related facilities.
Iran responded with missile and drone attacks targeting Israeli territory, U.S. military positions, and sites in parts of the Gulf, marking a rapid escalation into direct confrontation
Since then, the conflict has involved continued exchanges of strikes between the parties, with incidents affecting military targets and infrastructure in multiple locations across the region.
Some of the attacks have affected oil and gas facilities, contributing to disruptions in energy supply and increased volatility in global oil markets.
The Strait of Hormuz has also seen heightened tensions and increased military presence, raising concerns over the safety of international shipping through the route.
Efforts by international actors to de-escalate the situation have so far not resulted in a ceasefire, with hostilities continuing. (Sahara Reporeters)
