The day Nigeria’s most dangerous man Tinubu becomes president, that is the end, Sowore recalls the late Odumakin’s words

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has revealed that the late Yinka Odumakin, a former spokesperson for Afenifere, once warned that Nigeria would be doomed if Bola Ahmed Tinubu were to become President.

Sowore made this shocking revelation on Wednesday in Lagos on the fourth anniversary of Odumakin’s passing.

“Yinka called me and said… ‘Wait till the future, the guys you met are the most dangerous people Nigerians will ever have to confront,’” Sowore stated.

Odumakin was referring to Muhammad Sanusi II, who had recently been deposed as the Emir of Kano by the Abdullahi Ganduje-led government, and Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, whom Sowore had just met in Lagos.

Osinbajo later became vice president after the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Muhammadu Buhari won the 2015 presidential election.

Sowore explained that Odumakin, a relentless critic of political corruption, singled out Tinubu as the most dangerous politician Nigeria would ever have to deal with.

“He added another name, and this is very important for everybody. Anybody who knows Yinka, Yinka will tell you that the day Tinubu becomes Nigerian President, that is the end,” Sowore quoted him as saying.

According to Sowore, Odumakin frequently spoke privately and publicly about Tinubu’s potentially dangerous political ambitions, warning that Nigeria would be in deep trouble if he were to assume power.

He said, “He said of all the dangerous people Nigerians have, Tinubu is the most dangerous. That is what Yinka told everyone. If you had a private conversation with Yinka, Yinka would tell you, ‘You have not seen anything yet until Tinubu becomes President’; with the hope that Tinubu would never become President.”

Sowore lamented that Odumakin’s worst fears have now become reality.

“Tinubu has become President and Yinka is in a better place. Because I don’t know how he would have survived under this Tinubu’s regime. The truth there has come to pass; that Tinubu is the most dangerous person,” Sowore stated.

He went further to explain why Odumakin believed Tinubu posed such a grave threat to Nigeria.

“The reason why he (Yinka) said this: of all the politicians in Nigeria, the one that recognised and worked with every evil president in Nigeria is Tinubu. He has worked with the military, he has worked with drug dealers. He has worked with people who killed people,” he said.

Sowore accused Tinubu of rising to power through a system of impunity and corruption, stating that Odumakin had long warned about this.

“And he himself has risen through the rank of impunity. So Yinka’s predictions, his prophecies have come to pass,” Sowore said.

Odumakin, until he died in 2021, was a vocal advocate for democracy, transparency, and accountability, often clashing with those in power. His widow, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, has continued to uphold his legacy of activism.
