Tinubu govt failing Nigerians as gunmen turn rural communities into graveyards, killers go unpunished –Amnesty International
December 02nd, 2025
The global human rights body, Amnesty International, has said that the administration of President Bola Tinubu has failed to protect Nigerians as attacks and abductions escalate across several states.
The organisation in a post on its social media on Monday said the recent surge in violence, especially kidnappings and school raids, underscores a deepening security crisis.
It has been reported that over the last few months, men wielding guns have struck repeatedly across Niger, Kebbi, Sokoto, Katsina, Kwara and Zamfara states.
In November 2025, 303 students and 12 teachers were abducted from a Catholic school in Niger State, one of the largest mass kidnappings in recent memory.
Just days earlier, a girls’ boarding school in Kebbi State was attacked, with 25 students taken by armed bandits.
Such attacks are not isolated. A recent report by SBM Intelligence, monitoring kidnappings nationwide, shows that Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto, Niger and Kebbi remain among the worst‑affected states.
Amnesty International first highlighted the frequency of violent incidents taking place across the country.
“In Nigeria, attacks by gunmen and abductions for ransom are increasingly becoming a daily routine,” it said.
The organisation then pointed to what it described as the government’s failure to meet its obligations to citizens in the face of these attacks.
“The government of President Bola Tinubu is failing in its constitutional and international human rights obligations to protect the lives of all people and to ensure access to justice for victims,” it said.
According to the statement, those responsible for the violence are rarely held accountable, leaving communities without justice.
“Suspected perpetrators of the killings and abductions invariably escape justice, while victims are directly and indirectly denied any form of redress,” it said.
The rights body stressed that rural communities are suffering the most severe impact as the violence continues.
“In many rural communities, only the graveyards are expanding daily,” it said.
