With 1 million Naira award, UNICAL’s best graduating student—a product of rejected pregnancy, promises mum cell phone

The stone that the builders have rejected has turned out to be the chief cornerstone. This scripture was fulfilled in the life of Mr.Takon Roland Ausaji.
Takon graduated from the Department of History and International Studies University of Calabar in the 2021/2022 academic session with a CGPA of 4.85 on the scale of 5.
He was not only the valedictorian, but also went home with a prize of One Million Naira by the Students’ Union Government of the University of Calabar.
Takon, who hails from Etung local government area in Cross River State also got the Vice-Chancellor’s award of N200,000 and other prizes.
He narrated that his mother was thrown out of her family when she became pregnant as a teenager while the man, who impregnated her denied the pregnancy and abandoned her.
Reading his valedictory speech, with his mother by his side, Takon recalled the trauma of growing up as a child of an abandoned single mother and described his mother as the only person, whoever believes in him.
In an emotionally laden speech, Takon told the mother, “you are the story behind this glory. Your tears, your toil, your unbroken spirit, your love and pampers fueled my aspiration and resolve to finish strong. I wanted to finish strong and finish better because I have to go to this school for you and for myself.
“Today will end when I have to ask neighbours to give you a phone when I want to talk to you, for I will get you a phone.”
Takon declared that education, to him, was not a privilege but a lifelong one as he was determined to change the narrative about children from poor backgrounds and their outcomes in life.
