Anambra gubernatorial election: Why Obi is against my second term — Obiano

The governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, has said that his refusal to give N7.5 billion to a former governor of the state, Mr Peter Obi, is the reason he (Obi) is working against his second term ambition.

Obiano said he refused to release the money on the grounds that public funds should be used for public good.

Ex- Governor Obi, who handed over to Obiano in 2013, had allegedly asked for a refund of over N7 billion which was allegedly used for campaigns.

Obi had severally denied requesting any money from his successor, insisting that if he had wanted, he would have taken enough from what he left in the state treasury while living the office.

But Obiano brought the matter once again, during the yesterday’s inauguration of his re-election campaign in Onitsha North Council Area.

He said the clarification became necessary due to recent accusations against him by the former governor.

Obiano said he refused to pay the money to Obi because he was aware that several donations were made by his friends and associates for campaigns ahead of his election in 2013.

“I was not convinced that it was right to part with such an amount because I know full well that there were fundraising effort to support my campaign, and the former governor was in charge of the funds and did not explain how the money was spent after the election,” he said.
